A few weeks back I launched my first Harmonica Quizz , the details of which can be found here. I had fewer responses than hoped, but it's a first edition, and many told me it was too difficult. Nonetheless, there was a perfect answer amongst those received which leads me to think that if it was too difficult for some, ot may have been too easy for others !
The winner of French harmonica enthusiast and fellow harp blogger David Chalumeau. Over the years, David and I have shared many records and I suspect he knows my tastes too well. I'll have to take that into account for further editions of the Quizz ! He wins his choice of one of the 3 CDs that were offered.
And now for the answers.
The first excerpt was of course the amazing Jim Fitting of Treat Her Right fame playing with his own band The Coots. This solo was taken from the song Mosquito featured on their frst album Message from the Seventh Dimension.
The second excerpt was French jazz player Olivier Ker Ourio playing on the wonderful album Sominnker, a blend of reunion island rhythms and jazz harmonies. The song is a heavily personalised cover of John Coltrane's Naïma.
The third excerpt was recognised by most of those who answered. It was, of course, Big Walter, playing Trouble in Mind on the album Big Walter Horton with Carey Bell. My guess is this is the solo half the harp players out there used as a first position reference.
The fourth excerpt was groove roots singer, guitarist and harp player G. Love with his trio G. Love and Special Sauce. This nice slow vamping is featured on the intro of Tomorrow Night from the album Coast to Coast Motel.
Thanks to all of those who answered, and expect a new quizz in the coming weeks !
